Stéphane Bannwarth
It is a gift to be able to work with Stéphane Bannwarth on a daily basis.
This great man is calm and measured and wise, but his capacity for wonder and thirst for learning are limitless. Since taking over the family estate, he has never ceased to go further, to understand and respect the living and the people around him.
Stéphane’s great hands are always in motion, skilful and inventive he never ceases to improve the existing, to develop more efficient tools, more adapted to the practice of viticulture in agrobiology. With his father, they know the work of wood and metal, which allows them to improve the existing or even to invent it as soon as a lack is felt.
In his vineyards, Stéphane observes, compares, tests constantly, he listens and pays attention to details that become important before his eyes. His practice of viticulture is becoming lighter and lighter, all the gestures are questioned to keep only the essential, the useful and the most respectful of his environment. He reinforces biodiversity by planting live hedges around his plots and experiments with the presence of trees in the middle of the too monochord rows of vines.
The pretty fertile terroirs often loess that surround the estate produce under the good care of the Banwarth family fruity wines, always fresh often flattering in their youth. But it is at aging that they reveal an elegant and racy classicism, surprising textures and impressive mineralities.
In the cellar our calm and measured Stéphane is full of audacity and innovation. He tries sparkling wines made with overmurred grapes, tries oxidative aging in barrels on residual sugar wines …
Since the visit of a Georgian intern, he has been stung to entrust some cuvées to the earth. He installed many Qvevri, traditional amphorae of Georgia and made it a new playground and acquaintance.
It is a pride for our adventure to have Stéphane, his resources and his questions and it is a pleasure to drink these wines.
